There are specific times in one’s life that will be with them forever. The moments that you will tell your grandchildren about. The last two days have been stocked full of those moments. I would first like to thank, from the bottom of my small-town Mississippi heart, Warner Brothers Music Group and Mikael. You have no idea what being able to come out and listen to the album has meant to me.
Now for the goodies!
Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys!
Track 1 “Look Alive Sunshine”
Dr. Death Defying introduces us to the Fabulous Killjoys! This is what we hear at the beginning of the “Na Na Na” video.
Track 2 “Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)”
If you haven’t heard this song by now, well you must live under a rock. As My Chemical Romance’s first single off the album, it’s a balls-to-the-wall kick in the teeth. They literally come out with laser guns blazing. Word to the wise, set your cruise control for this baby. It should come with a giant warning label “Danger: may be hazardous to your health”.
Track 3 “Bulletproof Heart”
This is one of my favorites. The beginning starts as if you are on a star cruiser admiring the Milky Way (not to be confused with Mikey Way) and quickly explodes into a soaring chorus that makes you pump your fist in the air and yell “HELL YEAH!!” It’s a swelling anthem of unity that almost made me cry!
Track 4 “Sing”
Down and out, all hope is lost? Never! Set your CD to track number 4, and be inspired to keep going when you are ready to give up. This single off the album is a rock ballad of sorts, but no less amazing than the tracks before it.
Track 5 “Planetary (Go!)”
Take cover, put on your masks, it’s about to get ugly. This track starts out with serious sirens that bleed into an infectious beat with Gerard whispering. Then get ready people, all hell breaks loose! The song bursts into guitar riffs and a beat that goes right to your head. It then takes an unexpected turn, getting melodiously calm only to explode again leaving you wanting more by the end!
Track 6 “The Only Hope for Me Is You”
With another out-of-this-world intro, this song tells us a little more about the world of the Killjoys. In a world now desolate with few survivors you have to stick together to stay alive.
Track 7 “Jet-Star and the Kobra Kid/Traffic Report”
This track finds us with Dr. Death Defying once again broadcasting to all the motor babies letting them know what’s up in the zones. It quickly leads to the next song in the track list.
Track 8 “Party Poison” (once known as Death Before Disco)
After Dr. Death leads us into this song, we then hear a girl speaking Japanese. Sounds very much like another report of some sort. I am very anxious to hear it translated. Behind the second report you hear a building of yet another addictive rhythm that quickly turns into a bad ass guitar solo. You can’t help but tap your foot to and nod your head to the seeping, 80’s punk feel.
Track 9 “Save Yourself, I’ll Hold Them Back”
Coming out of the gate, you get a slower, steady beat with this track. It isn’t as fast as a lot of the others. With Gerard belting out “We can live forever if you have the time,” it’s a solid rock track with some seriously awesome guitar riffs at the end. It won’t leave you disappointed.
Track 10 “S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W”
This one made me want to grab the people’s hands around me and sway. The voice distortion gives this song a feeling like none of the others. It relates more closely with the whole theme of the album, going back to what is happening in the zones. MCR delivers an addictive chorus that will be impossible to get out of your head!
Track 11 “Summertime”
If any track on the album could be called a slow love song, this is it. “Run away with me anytime you want,” I got the feeling the only running the people in this song would do is behind an abandoned barricade to have a little cuddle. It’s a feel good tune as well as a big departure from the other songs, but refreshing none-the-less.
Track 12 “Destroya”
If the track before it didn’t do it for you this sure the hell will. Another huge favorite of mine, “Destroya” brings a whole new element to MCR’s ever changing style. It fades in with a tribal drum beat that makes you wonder if you are, indeed, still listening to MCR. Gerard’s vocal styling during the verses instantly made me think of Beastie Boys, Sabotage. One fan at the listening party felt that it sounded similar to something from Rage Against the Machine. As for the sounds on the choruses, I would have to say I agree. There are a few other things going on with this song and well I will just let you draw your own conclusions on that.
Track 13 “The Kids From Yesterday”
While this track could be considered a song about the survivors in the zones having to grow up quickly and face the aftermath, I like to think it talks about the band members themselves and the older fans who are still kids at heart. It’s a song about the good old days and brings back fond memories from your youth.
Track 14 “Goodnite, Dr. Death”
Here we have Dr. Death Defying signing off the airways. Another day done in the zones and the hope for a new day to dawn, and then… something so predictable but so unexpected happens! A long time ago when I was young cable access channels signed off the air in the same fashion every night. You would see a multi-color barred screen and the National Anthem would be played in its entirety. Dr. Death’s sign off was no different. The full National Anthem was played and I found myself giggling uncontrollably! Awesome doesn’t even cover it.
Track 15 “Vampire Money”
Picture yourself, its 1978; you’re on Bowery Street looking for an ear full of punk. You walk in a club and see a bunch of brightly clad dudes with crazy, greasy hair. Now turn on Vampire Money and crank the volume wide open! This little diddy is a full fledged, kick you in the ass, take no prisoners, punk masterpiece. The song starts out with a beat that instantly makes you want to get up and move. Then Gerard does an introduction of each member of the band, and the rest is history! This is by far and above my absolute favorite song on the album.
And there you have it, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys! This album gives the other MCR albums a run for their money!
